ACCRA: INDEPENDENCE DAY ARMWRESTLING CHALLENGE

The Centre Point Mall in Accra was the venue for Ghana at 68 Independence Day armwrestling challenge. Ghana Armwrestling Federation opened it arms for pullers from Benin, Nigeria, and Togo.

The championship commemorated arm wrestling’s historic feat of winning 41 medals for Ghana during the 2023 African Games. Present at the event were several dignitaries, including Minister for Sports and Recreation, Mr. Kofi Adams and his team from the Ministry, the Vice President of GAF, Dr. Kofi Addo Agyekum, former Minister for State Enterprises, Mr. Joseph Cudjoe and the MP for Berekum West, Mr. Dickson Kyere Duah among others.

Some Federation heads were also present. In the female +80kg category, Ghana’s Grace Minta beat opposition from Nigeria, Benin, and Togo to grab the gold medal. Her compatriots, Florence Boakye and Afia Kumah, won silver and bronze medals.

In the male category, African Games medalist Wisdom Abromekeyi cleared all opposition to take home the gold medal in the 65 kg category, beating Daniel Acquah and Benin Amoono Stephen in the process. New kid on the block, Joshua Yeboah from Chicken Wing Club, dominated the 90 kg men’s category with ease to win the gold medal, announcing his arrival on the big stage. The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Mr. Kofi Adams, was happy at the turn of events.

The Vice President of the World Armwrestling Federation, Mr. Charles Osei Asibey, says their major target is to get Olympic Games representation.

Tokens were presented to deserving pullers. Mabel Yeboah won bronze in the 65 kg Women category. Adefunke Adeniforo from Nigeria picked silver while Marie Rose from Benin pick Gold. The Independence Armwrestling Challenge was part of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation’s efforts to promote the sport and identify new talent. The next major Armwrestling event in Ghana is the Kids Armwrestling challenge.
