World Cup: Defender picks Asamoah Gyan’s legendary 3 as Ghana squad numbers revealed

Ghana’s squad numbers for the World Cup in Qatar have been confirmed, with defender Denis Odoi taking Asamoah Gyan’s legendary Number 3.

The former Ghana captain wore the Number 3 jersey in the three World Cups Ghana have been to, setting the record for most African goals scored. Gyan scored one goal in his first World Cup in 2006, which was historic because it was the first goal scored by Ghana.

Gyan, with experience from Germany, was in fine form in 2010, scoring three goals, including the stunning winner against the United States in the Round of 16. The former Sunderland man then scored twice in 2014 in Brazil for a total of six goals to become Africa’s leading World Cup scorer.

Odoi has taken up the number in the hopes of playing an important role in Ghana’s campaign in his first tournament with the Black Stars.

The squad numbers may provide some insight into who will start for coach Otto Addo, Lawrence Ati-Zigi wearing number 1, Andre Ayew (10), Thomas Partey (5), Jordan Ayew (9), Tariq Lamptey (2), Mohammed Salisu (4) and Inaki Williams (19).

Ghana began training camp on Tuesday and will play Switzerland in a friendly match on Thursday.

Black Stars will kick off their World Cup campaign against Portugal on Thursday, November 24. They will also play South Korea and Uruguay.
